Project Aim

To raise awareness of energy security issues in the local community

To provide a source of income for an ancient building with very high maintenance bills

To demonstrate that the local community can take responsibility for its own needs

Further details

Installation of a 10 kW solar PV system on a grade 1* listed parish church dating back to the 1100s.

Inspiration

Involvement with Transition movement

Outcomes so far

Income for the church Opportunities for discussion of the big issues Changed perceptions of the church's role in the community (environmental leadership)

Unexpected outcomes

Support and enthusiasm of congregation for the project and interest in environmental matters. Growing involvement of the congregation in the Transition group.

Obstacles, and how we overcame them

Opposition from English Heritage, planners etc, overcome by:

1. Briefing all local groups we could possibly reach with talks about Transition and our key local projects

2. Holding a demonstration day when sample panels were lifted on to the roof and viewed from all possible observation points.

Achieving the legal faculty from church authorities took as long as getting the project together and getting planning permission - nothing we could do about this except keep chasing the church bureaucracy and waiting.
