I will never forget the first time I saw, in a primary school textbook, a telling photograph of a giant landfill site in Spain. An aerial view showed a huge crater scarring the dusty Murcian landscape, open to the elements, and lined with goodness knows how many protective sheets of industrial strength polythene. At the time the photograph was taken, the ugly gash was approximately half full.
