Project Aim

Project Title : Un Verger dans ma Ville (An Orchard in my City)

Project Aims :

  1. To increase local food security for inhabitants of SQY, and re-connect people with the idea of eating fresh fruit from their own garden or street

  2. To encourage a variety of projects around the culture of fruit trees in the domains of social solidarity and economic (LETS systems and fruit sharing festivals, new local employment possibilities), education and culture (workshops and nutrition), recycling (dry toilets and compost), natural spaces (pollinating insects, tree, plant and flower guild creation)

  3. the creation of a city-wide orchard conservatory, composed of ancient, local varieties of edible trees (fruits and nuts), planted in private gardens and public spaces.

Further details

Project Description : This project involves the creation of a non-profit association for the purpose of group purchases of edible fruit and nut trees, with the aims of enhanching local food security, access to organically grown fruits and preservation of ancient local varieties of fruits.

A period of awareness raising of the project is planned for the period of 2011, with local media press releases, participation in a local plant fair sponsored by the environmental center planned for April 30,2011.Themed workshops, conferences, group visits to the grower, and collective preparation and planting days are planned.

A google map will plot the location of edible trees around the agglomeration of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

The first group purchase delivery date and fruit tree fair is planned for November 2011.

Inspiration

Historic : Our local area was once covered with apple and pear orchards, all of which were razed in the 1970's to make way for new suburban housing. One of the local ancient varieties of pear tree is rare and an additional plan is to graft this local variety in order to preserve it and replant it locally. Food Security and health : It is contantly remarked that the price of organically grown fruit makes it impossible for those with small food budgets. Planting organicaly grown trees in our own gardens, near public housing, and in public space where currently there is nothing but grass growing, adds to our food security, and provides fresh, free, non-treated fruit for inhabitants.
