Project Aim

To raise awareness around peak oil, climate change, and the transition concept, to school children. To introduce GETI (Golden Ears Transition Initiative) to the local school board and teachers.

Further details

Jack Emberly, a retired teacher and story teller, wrote an allegory called "A Tale of the Two Headed Giant who Hated Being Big". The story was developed to introduce peak oil, climate change, and the transition concept to school children.

We presented the story to school district 42 (local school district) as a writing contest for grades 4 to 12, with prizes is several categories. Jack then read the tale to the students in a number of schools, followed by a question and answer session around the topics of peak oil, climate change, and the transition concept. Those wishing to participate in the contest were encouraged to write a sequel to the alegory.

The prizes were presented at the local Earth Day celebration.

Inspiration

We are a young initiative in the awareness raising portion of our growth and were looking for a way to engage the largest audience. Awareness raising must happen at all levels, but when you engage the children, you also engage their parents.

Outcomes so far

We developed a strong positive connection with our local school board and some of our teachers. We achieved some awareness raising and our transition initiative increased visibility in the community.

Unexpected outcomes

There has been keen interest in the story from several school districts.

Lessons Learned

Our intention was to get participation from grades 4 to 12 but due to time constraints and teacher schedueling issues, our audience covered grades 4 to 7. We are planning to repeat the contest during the next school year and will make sure we present it with adequate time to participate. We may also include an art portion to the contest and we will also guarantee that teacher participation work load be kept to a minimum.

Sources of Funding

Funding and prizes came from BPAN (Boiling Point Action Network Climate Change Society), Suncor Energy, and Photo Express
