Project Aim
Tagpassiton is a loyalty scheme for the community; we are incentivizing people to consider the community balance when they shop by providing exclusive discounts and special offers to Tagpassiton cardholders as a reward when they shop with local and independently-owned businesses .
On top of that we are helping local organisations and charities to raise money for their cause through selling our cards for a substantial profit (with no financial risk).
We also take a more direct role by giving a portion of our profits to a chosen organisation in each locality where our schemes are active.
Further details
Tagpassiton is a loyalty scheme from which everybody in the community - individuals, businesses, organisations and charities -benefits both socially and economically.
We are encouraging people to consider the community balance when they spend and to develop the habit of shopping locally with independent businesses. We do this by providing exclusive offers and discounts to our cardholders, for a defined period, for £5. We are also linking up with local community groups to encourage more personal networks to develop between local businesses and groups of their existing and potential customers.
Why Shop with Independently-Owned Businesses?
The scheme was formed upon the basis that independently owned businesses tend to provide better value for money, are fairer to and use more local suppliers and also tend to provide a much more enjoyable personal shopping experience. Money spent in local independent businesses is much more likely to remain in the local community.
Many people, however, tend to shop with bigger, better-known businesses which have large promotion budgets as a default, and rarely if ever take a moment to reassess the way they shop and to try alternatives.
We are attempting to change this mindset by incentivizing such a reassessment with exclusive discounts and offers available to our cardholders when they shop with participating businesses. We are also experimenting with different local low cost advertising and promotions thus enabling the independents in our scheme to join together for specific promotions and engage with their local community.
What we see and have seen is that people, once they have tried the alternatives and made a comparison, tend to stick with independent businesses.
The Benefits Brought By Tagpassiton
For Cardholders
Each of the businesses taking part in the scheme offers an exclusive offer or discount on their goods or services which is available to cardholders. Our focus is on independents as a criteria, rather than a particular business sector; this means that within any Tagpassiton scheme there will be a huge range or different business types, be that retail, catering, produce or services.
We aim to provide an independent alternative for any want or need a cardholder may have.
Not only is the Tagpassiton scheme a great way to save money, but it helps you to find out about businesses that you may never have heard of or had never thought to try out. Cardholders can also use the scheme as a social tool, should they wish to do so, by becoming more involved locally when they put themselves forward as a volunteer for a community pool.
Every locality in which Tagpassiton is active is treated individually, but cardholders can use the card anywhere within the scheme and not just in their local area.
For Businesses
Each of our schemes unites a range and number of businesses into one loyalty scheme, combining all of the perks of a traditional one-business scheme (greater customer affinity for your business; greater customer retention) with the means to attract new customers and convert them into regulars.
How a business wishes to use the scheme is reflected in their offer: a one-off bonus or a sign-up reward is obviously a way of attracting new customers from the huge pool of potential customers who shop with other businesses in the scheme, whereas a staple x% off would be used as encouragement to return.
The key aspect of the scheme for businesses is that they choose the discount, adapting it to their own business model and needs. We ask only that the discount is exclusive to cardholders, and that it is not inferior to offers that they may be eligible to anyway.
Any changes they want to make require only that we be informed, and they may opt out of the scheme for certain periods if they so wish, provided that we are informed.
To be in the scheme for a year requires a one-off payment of £10. For that sum businesses are also provided with:
• A window sticker
• Their details on our website
o Name
o Description (10-25 words, chosen by them)
o Address and Telephone Number
o Link to Website
• Downloadable Material
o Offer-Poster Template
o Our Logo (for print and website)
It is also worth noting that by signing up to Tagpassiton a business is joining a wider community of other businesses, many of which may be new to them. If they are interested in getting in touch with other businesses in their area this can be a great starting point, and we are usually more than happy to facilitate contact.
Selling Cards
We recognize that the success of our scheme hinges on both its pro-community nature and its ability to spread widely. Our schemes provide a phenomenal value for money considering the benefits, but that is a moot point unless people are aware of our existence.
For this reason, and as a way of providing others with a way of profiting directly from Tagpassiton, we allow others to sell our cards on. Any registered cardholder, participating business, community organisation or charity may benefit from this opportunity, provided they agree to sell the card for no more than its retail price.
As an incentive, they buy the cards from us for £2.50 (provided they buy >10), and keep any profit for themselves.
In order to facilitate cardselling we provide various downloadable material, such as a Pocket Directory – which displays a list of the businesses taking part and their offers, while being small enough to fit in your pocket – and a poster demonstrating that they sell our cards. We are always very accommodating with suggestions to make the process even easier.
Charities & Community Organisations
As we are very much focused on benefiting the community as a whole, we make certain provisions to organisations which are actively involved in community-based projects. These same provisions are also extended to registered charities and other non-profits.
Such organisations are exempt from up-front payment with regards to card-selling, instead being subject to a policy of sale-or-return. We are always keen to forge links with such organisations, and so endeavor to build a close relationship which permits such a payment policy.
Moreover, in each locality we choose an organisation to which we give a portion of our profits as a donation (10% from each card bought directly from us).

Links and Partnerships
Transition Durham was our first partner after having approached us when noticing our logo in a local store. They have been hugely supportive and a great source of information. It was through Transition Durham that links were established with Transition members in Chorlton, Manchester and then further contacts made. This relationship has been and continues to be a very valued one.
Community Index is a monthly magazine that is physically delivered to homes in two areas of Manchester that are covered by our scheme. Lesley heard about us through the Transition Movement and we have established a mutually beneficial engagement to ensure all sections of the local community are aware of the benefits of the scheme and how they can use it to support their local community. We are very lucky to have such a cost effective promotional printed resource in the areas of Didsbury and Chorlton with which to take our scheme forward as the ethos of the magazine compliments the Tagpassiton scheme exceptionally well.

Chorlton FM is a temporary community radio station usually funded by grants, which we are working in partnership with this year. The Tagpassiton scheme is proud to be their headline sponsor providing them with much needed additional funding which we have sourced for them from local independent businesses in its broadcast area. Most of the businesses are members of the Tagpassiton scheme but we are also working as a scheme in partnership with other non-tag local businesses to ensure that the radio station can provide a free medium for any local community group to access and have their voices heard by their own community. This provides them with radio training should they need it and opportunities to inform and ask for help. We have also organised a treasure hunt as part of this initiative to increase footfall and awareness of the independents and the broadcast frequency during its broadcast period. Community Index have kindly helped with publicity too. www.chorltonfm.com
South Manchester Regeneration Team heard about our scheme through one of our business members and we were invited to join the project 'Levenshulme Means Business Week' This was a wonderful opportunity and involved working in partnership with Levenshulme Traders, Ward Co-Ordinators, local groups and again both Tag and non-Tag businesses. http://www.manchester.gov.uk/news/article/5914/levenshulme_means_business
We have a page on our website showing groups we have linked with and partnerships we have formed. These are all ongoing and developing. http://www.tagpassiton.com/our_friends.html
