Project Aim

To re-generate a town centre brown field site using permaculture principles.

Main aims -

Maintain and enhance biodiversity already present on site

Create access points and paths

Develop some productive growing spaces

Demonstrate permaculture ideas such as mulch beds, food mandala's etc

Involve as many local people as possible through regular work parties and wider PR activities

Further details

Our Transition town permaculture group has been given permission by the developer that owns the ground for us to use it for two to five years possibly more as there are as yet no plans for development. Our interest began after much negative press in the town regarding the "eyesore". We entered the site for some gorrilla gardening in the spring of 2010 - casting seeds and litter picking. By the late summer not only did we have sun flowers flowering on the site but permission to use the site for a community garden. During the winter of 2010/11 we have been meeting regularly both on and off site to design gardens for the space. We have been having monthly work parties and have so far layed out paths, cleared rubbish and moved several tonnes of organic matter on to the site. Presently we are working on an area within the Sturminster newton transition town web site to outline our work and future plans. Into the spring we will be holding a series of work parties for people to learn about permaculture gardening.

Inspiration

Doing something positive with an otherwise overlooked opportunity

Outcomes so far

Strong working group formed helping those involved to learn about permaculture and its application.

Lessons Learned

When running the volunteer days we have learnt to have a detailed briefing at the start of the day - everyone singing from the same hymn sheet improved productivity no end.

Sources of materials

Town council grounds staff allowed us access to their waste heap which turned out to have many tonnes of well rotted humus under un-rotted top layer.
