Description

Aims:

The aim of the project is to convey to local people in Bridport that according to a survey made, local seasonal food is not only tastier, fresher and free from chemicals, but is also just as cheap as supermarkets produce

Further information:

The Food Group of Transition Town Bridport (TTB) have launched an initiative to promote using local independent greengrocers and market stalls in the town. Bridport is lucky to have many more outlets that similar towns of this size. Following a survey that showed local seasonal fresh food was no more expensive than supermarkets (except one!) the group wants to share their findings and reveal some of the things that happen to 'fresh' food. In particular the way 'natural' food is processed, the age of the produce and the food miles involved. Additionally the pressure put on producers, by the supermarkets, to sell bargain offers to families.

Using Market Day just before Christmas, TTB plan to have a fun stall getting shoppers to taste the difference between local organic and supermarket vegetables and fruit. Further plans are to persuade families to pledge that they will make some of their weekly shop local.

Young People asked for cookery classes

Transition Town Bridport (TTB) have become part of a larger partnership, working in Bridport's Youth Centre. The centre has opened it's premises, on Saturdays, for a range of workshops; TTB has responded to a request from the youngsters - Cookery classes, using local, fresh and seasonal food from scratch, on a budget. The workshop will be guided by it's participants but it will explore how to shop, preserve, clean, prepare, cook, present, serve, share and eat the food, how to clear away, clean up and preserve leftovers.

The project is planned for the summer months of 2013
