Project Aim

To provide easy to use information about sourcing food locally.

To help people see what is the next step in their journey towards more sustainable food choices.

Further details

Local Harvest is a website resource focusing on food relocalisation and the promotion of alternatives for food production in an urban setting.

  • Its a national directory for finding food co-ops, food swap meets, community gardens, farmers markets, box systems, 'pick your own' farms, farm-gate products, organic retailers, seed saver networks, free-range meats, and more. Users can find alternative local food sources based on their own locality by placing in a postcode.
  • A second component is the promotion and exploration of do-it-yourself alternatives for food production and meeting essential needs, including resources for growing your own food, making your own produce, storing and preserving, low energy living.

Initially we largely drew on the many existing resources, and collating them into one place.  Now the community is invited to add more listings and make it more comprehensive.

This project is being championed by Ethical Consumer Group.

Local Harvest was launched at, and deeply embedded, in Melbourne's Sustainable Living Festival in February 2012.  The Local Harvest challenge is the first week of April 2012.

Inspiration

Nick from Ethical Consumer Group had the inspiration. His not-for-profit organisation produces a guide to the best choices in the supermarket. But he came to realise the best choices are outside supermarkets. We are glad to be able to help him.

Outcomes so far

Launch February 2012. Lots of media interest.

Sources of Funding

Crowd sourced from Pozible,  The Sustainable Table, in kind contribution from Sustainable Living Festival, who co-ordinated our launch.

Sources of materials

Initially this project was all about collating existing sources of information and making them available in an easy to use format.
