Project Aim

Working alongside a couple of existing initiatives, the transition scheme is pioneering tree and hedge planting. Sites are being sought and a list of willing participants has been compiled. A first hedge planting session took place on Friday 18th February 2011 in Hythe, along the allotments on South Road, with 14 or so enthusiastic planters armed with spades. This was the first time that Transition Hythe had 'got its hands muddy' – the first of many, hopefully. Other planting has taken place and we have also received the go-ahead from the local council to turn a large grass bank in the town into a wildflower area.

Further details

The area for the first planting was between some established allotments and a newly laid football pitch. A green barrier was felt to be desirable. Hythe Civic Society and Hythe Town Council already had a planting scheme under way. The Transition Scheme became involved (some of the Civic Society are also now in the Transition Town project team), providing resources and publicity. Both local newspapers carried information about the dig and one of them subsequently covered it, with a photo of the team hard at work. Other planting has happened since then, including along the Royal Military Canal.

Unexpected outcomes

We made good contact with the local allotment holders, who joined us for the first planting. The chairman of the allotments also opened discussions with the transition scheme about a plan by the council to lease the allotments to the community. A meeting between transition scheme members and the town clerk was held but no decision has been made in relation to this.

Lessons Learned

If you have lots of people, you get things done quickly – basic, really! We could have done with more hedges to plant in the first session as the work was done and dusted in around one hour! Since then, we have sought planting teams of an appropriate size.
