Home Power & Warmth
Project Aim
Wycombe Home Power & Warmth is buying club run for home renewables. The aim is to get large discounts off the installation of any microgeneration technology so as to encourage a larger uptake on homes in the area. We will be promoting the Feed-in Tariffs and the Renewable Heat Incentives. The project has two parts: firstly a multi-vendor referral scheme where we refer interested householders to our 'panel' of selected local suppliers, secondly - a knowledge database where we take note of which suppliers get chosen, the quality of their work and value for money. This feedback allows us to improve our recommendations. The installer-panel members normally offer a discount to be part of the scheme but this is not obligatory. The installers offer more than just solar panels as we should be able to offer a wide-range of technologies. We consider it best practice to give householders a choice of suppliers. As long as the householder is free to choose then our discounts and the free market will give them value-for-money.
Further details
Since the introduction of the Feed In Tariffs and forthcoming Renewable Heat Incentive there has never been a better time to install domestic renewable energy systems. We initially shared a single vendor with another Transition Town but felt this was not offering all the technologies or choice we wished for. So we opened the field up to all vendors and technologies. The Transition Team need only over-see the quality and value for money aspects. Householders are free to choose the vendor that suits them and the technology that suits their home. That way we offer a best practice approach that offers quality over simply the cheapest option. We also believe that customers in our area would prefer an upfront discount over a later rebate becuase on the lower average incomes. Restricting this down to one supplier for a volume discount didn't offer the choice nor the initial discount scheme that was suitable for this area. We also believed that we could pursue quality and value-for-money by being free to offer multiple vendors. The management team could then pick and choose going forward as we learnt from experience. Hence it remains a "buying club" but more as a knowledge network than a bulk buying club.
