Project Aim

Your community, Your future

Green Energy Nayland (GEN) is a community enterprise that aims to bring renewable energy to the local area. We think it is important that;

  • there is an increase in the use of renewable energy sources
  • we increase our energy independence
  • everyone be able to participate in the benefits arising from the Government Feed in Tariffs, not just those with the money to install their own system. Our minimum investment is just £250.
  • everyone in the community can take part in reducing our overall carbon footprint

Further details

We are a community enterprise, incorporated as an Industrial and Provident Society (registration number 31184R), which is a special kind of limited company. We have used this structure because our goals are to benefit the wider community rather than to produce a financial gain for the owners. The Society is governed by its Rules.

The objects of the Society shall be to generate renewable energy in and for the benefit of the community of Nayland through promoting, funding, installing and operating renewable energy systems.

Inspiration

We wanted to build an organisation which could fund renewable energy installs without the revenue of the Feed In Tariff leaving the community. The school was an ideal launch site for our scheme, it has an active eco team and a perfect south facing roof!

Outcomes so far

£38,500 raised through community investment, £9,500 from a local grant and the subsequent install of the largest solar PV install on any school in the UK. Offset of 8 tonnes of CO2.

Unexpected outcomes

Huge amount of public and press interest. Huge satisfaction in working with local inspired people.

Obstacles, and how we overcame them

There were many. We will be publishing a guide on how we did it shortly. Please visit our web site www.greenenergynayland.org.uk
