Project Aim

Kaia Nightingale, from Transition Ottawa, worked with two profs. of media studies at a local university. As part of their course work, the two classes of students were tasked with creating a short film, less than 5 minutes, to convey a powerful, practical message that would inspire university students to live more simply, sustainably and joyously. Students were given a choice of six topics - food, water, energy, transport, garbage, and simple living, and supplied with local organizations working towards sustainability in these fields. Their task was to make their message fun, cool, intelligent, and inspiring for their age group.

This university curriculum course assessed their ability to communicate with their client, Kaia from Transition Ottawa, and deliver the required message. Few of these students were interested in environmental issues, so there was much learning.

The 14 films these students have made will be premiered on November 25th at a film competition. There will be clickers for the audience with the hope that these students will bring their friends to vote for them (thereby increasing the audience seeing their messages.) These films can be shown at Transition events providing focus and discussion points. It may be these films will be available to the greater transition network. Please inquire if interested.

Film competition and the showing of 14 films made to inspire students towards transition

Inspiration

Film is a powerful media. Students are the people who are about to enter the work force and become consumers, and many of them in North America are surprisingly disinterested in the environment and the need to become more sustainable. Most projects students do have little social value. The making of these films offers a new direction in these classes. Several other profs are taking notice of this.
