Educational initiatives from GETI's Little Red Schoolhouse
Project Aim
To explore and expand topics related to the transition movement through the medium of stories in which events and characters symbolize experiences in today's world. The allegory, The Giant With Two Heads Who Hated Being Big, can be seen as a model of people in a community dealing with problems that require transitional thinking and action. The story will allow us to weave in and out of this theme.
Further details
On March 1st the Tale of the Two Headed Giant Who Hated Being Big was introduced to students of School District 42 in Maple Ridge, BC, Canada as a writing contest.
Students heard the story of Peak and Climo, a two headed ogre whose gluttonous appetite and stinky breathe made life miserable for the folks of Westville, a mythical town much like many towns that need to move into transition in the face of peak oil (Peak) and climate change (Climo). Students were asked to write follow up stories of their own in the contest. Winners were presented with cash prizes, and their tales posted on the website, www.sd42.ca
The follow up activity, launched July 12th, 2010 demonstrated the use of this allegory as a vehicle for further group discussion of all topics relating to climate change, peak oil, and transition towns.
