Project Aim
A plot of land 3000 m2, is "given" to the transitiongroup in Salies de Bearn, in France to grow old variaties of vegatables. The place was a former railway station, now the former station is a music college.
The projets is based on
4xR : re -cycling old fruit (kiwi) crates, otherwise they will be burned
re- use of the plot of land, what is now a dull grass land, where no trees can grow
re -use (collecting) the rainwater or in french recupération from the roof of the college
re _use of driftwood and plastic found at the Atlantique beaches
Aims
Education: to learn ourselves and the citizens how we can grow vegetable with different techniques, lasagne, permaculture , square meter techniques etc
Participation: the land must be accessible for everybody and the aim is to make together the garden, no private plots of land
Integration: the land must be accessible for youngsters, eldery people and people in wheel chairs
It is a project for the citizens and by the citizens
We received the conformation that an artist will make a sculpture for this garden , based on objects found on the beach , like driftwood, plastic bottles, and funny plastic 'wheels' read the amazing story

sculpture and amazing story from Portugal

The garden sculpture will be made entirely from recuperated and recycled materials that I collect.
Driftwood, plastic bottle caps, fish nets and lines, shells, recuperated meatal wires and screws, as well as these little wheel-like pieces of plastic that have been washing up by the hundreds of thousands onto the Aquitaine coastline for the past few years now. For the longest time nobody knew what they were, or where they were coming from. Now we know that a company in Portugal makes them. They use them in a mechanism to purify used water. When they are finished with them they are dumped into the ocean where they are later found in fish, birds and all over our beaches.
Using these little plastic wheels I have created a sort of picture diagram telling this story. It is mounted on a driftwood board. This board will be on top of a 3 or 4 walled structure made from many pieces of driftwood. Under it will be a hand-carved inscription "No More Pollution in our Oceans" in portuguese and french.
It's a little hard to describe in words, but the sculpture will be less than 1 meter square and a little taller than myself. On top will be the Earth made from a lot of recycled plastic bottle caps. Built into the sculpture there will be birdhouses, refuges for insects, and shelters for rodents and other little animals.
I think it'd be great if the sculpture could also be interactive and visitors of the garden could carve their own environmental message onto any of the driftwood walls. In that case, I'd hang carving rocks around the sculpture so people could do that.
I will take some photos and try and make a sketch, but let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions or themes you'd like me to include.

24 January 2012 - 8:05am — Kitty de BruinLa sculpture de jardin sera faite entièrement en matériaux récupérés et recyclés que j’ai rassemblés…Bois flotté, bouchons de bouteilles en plastique, filets et lignes, coquillages, bout de fer et vis ; des petites pièces semblables à une roue de plastique, lavées en haute mer durant des années et trouvées sur le littoral de l’Aquitaine. Chacun ignorant ce qu’elles étaient et d’où elles venaient.
Maintenant, nous avons appris qu’elles étaient fabriquées par une société Portugaise. Ces pièces sont utilisées dans un mécanisme servant à purifier l’eau. Après les avoir utilisées, elles sont rejetées dans l’océan et on les retrouve plus tard dans le ventre des poissons, celui des oiseaux et partout sur nos côtes.
Utilisant ces petites roues en plastique, j’ai créé une sorte de tableau racontant cette histoire. Ce tableau est réalisé en bois flotté. Au bas de celui-ci, on pourra lire, écrit en portugais et français »Stop à la pollution de nos Océans ».
Il est un peu difficile de décrire en mots cette sculpture, supérieure à un mètre de surface et légèrement plus haute qu’un adulte.
Au sommet, on représentera la terre en bouchons recyclés de bouteilles en plastique.Au centre de la sculpture, nous y installerons des abris pour les oiseaux, des refuges pour les insectes, les rongeurs et autres petits animaux.
Cela serait certainement fabuleux si la sculpture pouvait également être interactive et permettre aux visiteurs du jardin de graver sur du bois flotté leurs propres messages liés à l’environnement. Dans cet objectif, j’ajouterai des pièces de bois flottés aux alentours de ce panneau afin que chacun puisse y inscrire son message.
Je vais essayer de prendre des photos et d’en faire une présentation, mais dîtes moi ce que vous pensez de ce projet et communiquez moi vos suggestions que je puisse inclure.
