Project Aim

Groningen people at work for Carbon neutral life

in a cohousing complex

in inner city or the area just outside of town

We Build and Link

The Carbon Neutral Development foundation develops live-work locations where the Carbon footprint is limited so far as is possible. The effect of modern society's prosperity upon the environment is too great. We want to maintain our prosperity and share it globally, but the burden placed upon the environment must come to an end. This is possible through a reduced dependancy on fossil fuels. A start can be made by reducing the Carbon footprint of our own particular way of life.

This private citizen's intiative seeks to achieve that by strengthening the bond between local food production and distribution whilst also sharing skills, knowledge and expertise. Social structure is created by arranging private homes and communities around central shared spaces thereby offering greater combined value.

As a start we are working on two pilot schemes: One in the inner city and one just outside.

Do you know more people who have an interest in this? Discuss it.

As a start we are working on two pilot schemes: One in the inner city and one just outside. Work is an integral part of the social structure. Working together on administration, education, food production and distribution. We make space for self employment and remote working – entrepreneurial people who are active in their own living environment. The development organisation consciously works through entrepreneurial networks in collaboration with small businesses.

Renovation of the high-rise office at 2 Eendrachtskade as a possible example. A communal enclosed shared space for residents of apartments would be created by adding a second outer skin of glass. Solar energy would be captured within this subtropical greenhouse environment and stored deep beneath the ground.

Picture:

City edge development - for example at Meerstad nearby to Slochteren – it is proposed to build a spatially and socially integrated farming village with small scale production of vegetables and dairy products. The residents can contribute farm labour in return for a regular supply of fresh produce.

Inspiration

Carbon neutral is not only a matter of building with sustainable means. It is a matter of building a new cooperation of active neighbourhoods. So we pay attention to cohousing, foodproduction & -distribution, local economy and education on all levels as well. Groningen is a good place for such an initiative because of its consentration of energy expertise and the presence of local universities with 35000 students.

Outcomes so far

Based on a vision of building on qualities of the city, the nature, food and housing we work on two pilotprojects: one in the city (12 floors) als one in the countryside nearby. The amount of participants who want to support these plans now has to increase. That will be the base for further contacts with the local government and other development partners. mai 2011

Unexpected outcomes

The educational partners we contacted -from secondary school up to university- are very interested to work with their students on our initiative. Finding and utilising the best talents of everyone who wants to join the initiative is not an easy to do task.

Obstacles, and how we overcame them

What started as an initiative amongst people who are already aware of the climate problem became an initiative of turning your back to that angry world that caused the climateproblem and making your own choices.

Due to the involvement of workers of the local government, where we asked for money for the start, the initiative became world-orientated. Students who made a marketing study of our plans for their university helped to make the initiative world-orientated. Since then politicians and local institutions start a dialoge with the initiative. That is a usefull base for increasing the involvement of more cityzens.

Lessons Learned

Since the climateproblem cannot be solved at once but will take at least a generation, it is very helpful to start with contacts with schools and universities.
