Transition Network 2011 UK conference: 8 to 11-July, Liverpool

This is just a quick heads up to say that we're going ahead with the conference this year at Hope University in Liverpool for 8 to 11-July (Hope Park campus).

  • Children's programme included (limited numbers)
  • Full price ticket looks like it'll be £5 less than last year
  • Most accommodation is onsite, with self catering an option (cutlery pots etc not supplied)
  • No camping onsite - we asked and cajoled, but they wouldn't budge
  • Provisional timings likely to be:
    • registration opens on Friday evening 8-July (continues Saturday morning)
    • main conference programme starts Saturday morning
    • finish Monday lunchtime 11-July

Note to wannabe film stars

BigBrotherChairWe'll be doing some key filming for the "In Transition 2.0" movie at the conference. We're thinking of a Big Brother type booth where transitioners can answer direct to camera a set of questions that aim to get to the essence of what transition is and why people are getting involved. Maybe we should do a reprise of the 2008 Whoosh from Cirencester (watch from 1:50 to get a quick feel for what that's like) and get that on camera too...

Note to sport nuts

NoMotorRacingNoSoccerA number of participants at last year's event were perturbed by the sight of otherwise rational and eco-conscious transitioners shouting loudly at a big screen that featured 22 UK and US "sportsmen" chasing after a piece of badly designed leather across a bright green field in an otherwise parched country in Africa.

No such nonsense this year - instead of clashing with 13(!) international sporting events, the 2011 conference coincides only with the British Motor Racing Grand Prix. If anyone clamours for that spectacle on the big screen, they'll get frogmarched double-time to the next available ecopsychology workshop!

Trees for Transition walk at Conference?

Hi Ben

Would the Transition Conference be interested in another Trees-for-Transition walk this year? People seemed to enjoy it last year at Seale Hayne. This year we could focus on trees in the urban environment, where they are just as essential as in the countryside.

I have just attended the Institute of Chartered Foresters annual conference on this very theme. See http://www.charteredforesters.org/default.asp?page=119 . I am also contributing to design guidelines on trees for health and wellbeing for the NHS Forest project. See http://nhsforest.org/

I have not seen a conference programme yet, but the early evening slot is good, after the workshops and before supper etc. I am sure we could find some streets, parks, gardens etc with and without trees to consider the contribution trees already make and the huge potential they could make to transition initiatives.
