About
Bassingbourn Transition Village (BTV) came about as a result of the Parish Plan which was initiated by volunteers in 2006 with the support of the parish council and funded by a DEFRA grant. The plan addressed the issues and concerns of parishioners which were collected through consultation. One of the groups, The Living Local working group explored initiatives that would help villages live more "locally" such as local food and energy production. In October 2008 BTV was initiated by the living local group supported by the parish council, the parish church, Bassingbourn Village College and school. It was agreed that BTV follow the template laid out by the transition towns movement. A leaflet explaining the need for Bassingbourn to become a sustainable community was issued alongside the final parish plan in late 2008. In April 2009 the parish council agreed that BTV should coordinate with South Cambridgeshire Sustainable Parish Energy Partnership (SPEP) on their behalf as part of an initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of South Cambridgeshire.
We are recognised as a transition town following the methodology laid out in the transition handbook. We are working with the community and a number of partners to address the issues of peak oil and climate change. Our current initiatives are: Energy and Homes, Food and Biodiversity, Transport and Travel and Social and Awareness. You can find information on and contribute to these initiatives in the groups area of our web site.
