Does anyone have recommendations of good eco hosting companies for websites?

I'm considering Eco Web Hosting (http://www.ecowebhosting.co.uk/home) mostly because they have a good reseller package that would allow multiple sites to be supported (a specific issue that would not affect someone just hosting one site), but I dont have much experience of site hosting and realise there are a range of factors that could affect the choice.

Thanks

Paul

Good find Paul,

I've been keeping bookmarks of web hosts we've seen around and about - I remember Steve Atkins talking about hostpapa, and one of the techs recently talking about ecobytes.

It's a bit of a balancing act, as all energy is drawn from the main grid, so hosts who say they're only 'green energy' aren't quite that (but they are paying their money to a green energy supplier). It's also important to consider the hardware they are using (new = more use of materials, but more efficient - old = less user of materials, but less efficient), and other things. And you may be interested in their business model.

For the Transition Network site, on top of this and of critical importance to us is the relationship with the web host as we have specific needs and require known humans to speak to, who will also agree to participate in some technical discussions, but that won't be for most TIs. Our editors were also very keen on having all our data in The UK...

True. But some places have a grid that only has renewable electricity, Iceland for example -- all the electricity is generated via geothermal and hydro.

And this is one of the key reasons why my work has started offering web hosting and virtual servers that are based in Iceland, see Ecological and Dissident Hosting at http://ecodissident.net/

To me, ethical hosting is any hosting platform that offers to save energy and resources. There are several vps out there that are virtual, meaning they are in the cloud and accessible from anywhere. What does this mean? Less waste. Less energy usage. Less pollution. One day, I think our phones will all be vps servers!
