 Hello,

I'm currently researching information on my local Transition Town becoming a charity.  Has anyone got experiences that they would like to share?  I'd love to hear from you.  Thanks very much.

Transition Town Totnes mem and arts is here: www.transitionnetwork.org/resources/sample-constitutions-transition-init....

It's quite a process, and does yield a benefit in terms of accessing funding streams that might otherwise not be open to you. There's more overhead in managing the charity - doing the reporting etc.

Hope that's helpful. Ben.

Ben - I chair Transition Chipping Norton. We recently won funds for exploring community-owned rural broadband options, from the LEAF progamme and have been asked by local business people to front a bid for a 'Portas' Town Team. We're currently unincorporated so had to get our district council to be our accountable body for the LEAF funds. I can see the same thing happening in future, which is not ideal. We've looked at the Community Interest Company legal form (large membership and limited by guarantee) as a way of incorporating. Have other Transition groups gone down this road? Are you aware of any possible limitations we've not thought about? Regards, Neil

The Simply Legal guide from Co-operatives UK is the best guide I'm aware of for choosing a legal form for a community group in the UK, you can download it as a PDF.
