Transition Green Maps
Let me tell you the story :
Geneva is an international city embedded in a bi-national territory at one end of Lake Leman. The scheme of this territory could be 3 concentrical circles : in the middle, the Geneva-city, next circle Geneva-canton, third circle a piece of canton de Vaud and nearby France (2 départements : Hte-Savoie & Ain). Local authorities have set up a project : Agglomération franco-valdo-genevoise, that essentially deals with energy, transport et materials.
As setting up a Transition movement only in Geneva-city didn't make sense for us, we (EcoAttitude) decided the first and best thing to do would be to give visibility and try and coordinate all the different numerous groups that are already active without often knowing eachother. So we naturally came to the idea of mapping the area with a bottom up point of view. And so we contacted Green Maps in Switzerland and in France, as well as GreenMapsSystem in New York. (greenmaps.org, .ch, .fr)
All these people came together last Sunday and decided they want to support the project of making a Franco-Valdo-Geneva Transition Green Map. A first citizen "Forum de l'agglomération FVG" is going to meet on December 3rd. EcoAttitude is coorganiser. All the active associations from Geneva and nearby France plus some authorities will be there. We intend to present the TRansition movement and the Map during that day . We will have only 5 minutes to do so.
So, we are not really following the usual Transition scheme of creating an initiative, but I feel we are strongly supporting the process nevertheless ! Could you give some feedback please ?
Now the urgent question is : GreenMap has a set of icons to indicate various "green" items, which - for most of them - are existing objects. Our intention is to map "people", "groups in process", "mulling initiatives", "reskilling activities", "transition sensitive groups", etc. so as to facilitate connections between people and coordonation among organisers. I understand labelling "TRansition initiatives" is not ours and as a matter of fact, we don't have any such advanced project in the area. Green Maps System New York agrees to make some special new icons for the Transition movement. She is waiting for our suggestions.
Here is where we need your help : do you agree and support the whole process that is going on in Geneva ? what kind of icons would you suggest be useful ?
Thanks for quick reply !! :-)
PS : EcoAttitude would be habby to invite Sophie Banks to speak of Inner Transition. Would she agree to come over one of these days ? :-)
Mapping the elements in your area that can help smooth the transition to the low carbon, resource constrained world is a very valuable thing to be doing. It helps the groups that you map to see that what they are doing is important, can encourage them to work together and shows that more is happening than they might think. It's vital to reach out to the wider community: showing that there's a lot of good stuff being done (it doesn't have to be called "Transition") helps to build awareness, understanding, support and resilience.
Sounds like a great project and I'm sure all transitioners will wish you good luck with it !
