Garden and Household Tool Co -operative -any advice?

I am part of a transition area group in West Dorset.

There is a real interest in  growing your own food, but many of the houses have small gardens unable to have a shed and veg plot, and families on low incomes find it hard to purchase tools.

We have been given a small grant of £1,000 to set up a tool sharing co-operative , and hope to have garden, and simple household tools for people to borrow.

Has anyone done anything similar, and if so, can you give us any pointers?

Many thanks

Sue

Hi Sue, we have been running a community food growing project in eastbourne for a couple of years now and we found that thru donations from the local council (who also offered the land to us) we received a metal tool shed, and some tools also, these are left on site when finished with for others to use when needed, but you could specify that these need to be returned to the shed after the tasks were completed. Before going out and buying tools like forks, spades, rakes etc, have you a local Freegle website, maybe request some from there. I wish you luck and if any more advice is needed if I can help I will do, karen

Hi SusieB,

I've just joined this website today and spotted your post.  It may be a bit late by now but you could use The Borrowers - www.theborrowers.co.uk where you can advertise tools, sheds, gardens, greenhouses, all manner of things - for free and even place a "Wanted" ad.  We have a number of people in Dorset registered with the site.  Good luck with your project.
