Community actions to create a thriving and resilient local economy

What future do YOU envisage for our community? Better? Worse? About the same as today? The media is full of regular warnings about various energy, environmental and economic crises that one way or another, are likely to impact our quality of life here on the mountain.

Individuals and governments around the world are beginning the difficult task of preparing for and dealing with these looming challenges. But perhaps the best place for effective action is at the community level, where we can choose to re-localise critical social systems like food, water, energy, healthcare, transport and so-on.

If we choose to plan and act together with creativity, purpose and passion we could create a more local way of living that's even more rewarding than the quality of life we enjoy today, and certainly more sustainable.

Please join us and participate in the process. You can start by reading our draft Sustainability Action Plan

Tamborine Mountain was registered as an official Transition Initiative in December 2009.

Activities

Throughout the year we screen documentaries, host public meetings, run Sustainable Living workshops, and in August 2011 launched our community-created Tamborine Mountain Sustainability Action Plan. Please register on this site to receive details of all upcoming events so you can participate in and contribute to the challenging process of making our community more resilient.

Household Energy Workshop - November 2011
When power prices go up, what must come down? That was the question posed at the November Transition TM workshop. Those present looked at what household electrical items were the big consumers. The group considered the practical benefit of a ClimateSmart audit – a Queensland Government service designed to help consumers put together a power management and power saving strategy (sign up here) or phone 133600). Since there’s a waiting list for this service, the group then looked at a DIY option via the these worksheets, which provide a step-by-step guide to analysing household power consumption and also how to do a risk analysis should supply be interrupted for any length of time.

A simple first step: Buy Local Fresh Produce

We're blessed on the mountain with rich volcanic soils, clean air and water - ideal growing conditions for a range of crops - and have a network of backyard growers plus small to medium sized farms following organic principles. YOU can enjoy the fruits of their labour by buying your produce every Sunday morning at the 'Green Shed'.

The "Green Shed", located at The Showground, Main Western Rd., Mt. Tamborine, Queensland, is the local market for fresh, mostly organic, fruit & vegetables, and is open EVERY WEEK on Sunday mornings from 7.00am to noon. We also sell flowers, honey, nuts, herbs & plants. The Green Shed is run by the Local Producers Association as a non-profit community enterprise. The only beneficiaries are the growers themselves, and of course YOU! See www.greenshed.com.au for more information.
